The Art of Books: Publishers’ Bindings Online 1815–1930

If you love books and book cover design, prepare to get lost for a long, long time at Publishers’ Bindings Online. I learned quite a bit browsing through the galleries. For instance the style known as Eastlake, named after Charles Locke Eastlake (1836-1906) who’s work was the precursor to what later developed to be the Arts and Crafts movement. Also the Art Nouveau and Japonisme galleries are rich with inspiration.
One note: the UI is not always intuitive, to search for all the samples of a given period click the “Search the PBO Database for…” link at the bottom of each gallery.
Enjoy

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.

Camo 2012 Spring/Summer Collection

Italian brand Camo presents its Spring/Summer 2012 lookbook. Known for their ultra-Italian aesthetic, the brand (which has garnered a bit of a cult following over the last few years) is based in Biella – a region of Northern Italy famous for its fabric mills. Inspired by the river “Cero,” Camo’s latest collection includes brand staples such as perfectly askew tailored suiting, lightweight patterned scarves, knit polo shirts and a felt, wide-brimmed hat. The full collection will be unveiled soon at (capsule) Paris.

Paul Smith kits out Man Utd

If anyone can make footballers, for so long a byword for bad taste, look even slightly more elegant, it's Sir Paul Smith. Ahead of this Saturday's Champions League final at Wembley, the designer has kitted out Manchester United with a strong line-up of grey wool/mohair suits, white cotton shirts and burgundy silk ties. (Indeed, we almost wish they were playing AC Milan - purely from a style point of view, of course.) Here Sir Paul reveals the thinking behind his selection to GQ.com, plus his best advice for how to get off a bus after a long journey and still look good.

Get Ready for the 13th

2046

In this sequel to Hong Kong-based filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love, Tony Leung Chiu-wai returns as struggling writer Chow Mo-wan, but now he's a boozing womanizer who writes soft porn. Through time travel and parallel worlds, this lushly photographed romantic drama explores Mo-wan's relationships with various women, including the one he truly loves, Su Lizhen (Gong Li). 2046 premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
